Toile Blanche: Artistic Tranquillity in Saint-Paul-de-Vence

Toile Blanche is a 200-year-old converted farmhouse turned boutique hotel, owned and run by local artists the Leroy brothers, just outside the medieval village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence. This hideaway is the true definition of low-key luxury — all laid-back energy, with jaw-droppingly beautiful interiors that are effortlessly cool.

First Impressions

Although the hotel has been open for several years, its recent redesign has drawn in a new breed of traveller. Quietly tucked away on the outskirts of one of the prettiest villages in France (travel content creators — you’ll know the one, with the famously photogenic corner Airbnb), this is the kind of place you have to know about to find. But it deserves far more attention than it asks for.

Even in June, the hotel felt exceptionally peaceful — perhaps borderline too quiet for some. More than once, we were the only guests in sight. But if you’re after discretion and seclusion, this is the place. For us, it was the perfect antidote to a busy weekend in Monaco for our travel company event. At dinner, we sat beside a high-profile couple — not a single double-take in sight.

The Rooms

We stayed in one of the two Bon Vivante suites: adjoining, villa-style spaces with private pools. The interiors are divine — muted, earthy tones and tactile textures create a calm, considered atmosphere that never feels bland. The suite is spacious and light-filled, with Crittall doors leading out to a stunning terrace with not one but four relaxation zones. Take your pick: sun, shade, lounge, or nap.

If you’re not in a suite or villa with a private pool, there are two shared pool areas — both generously kitted out with loungers, especially given the hotel only has 16 rooms.

The Food

The restaurant has a solid local reputation and (weather permitting) serves dinner on a beautiful terrace overlooking the pool and the French countryside. It’s an idyllic spot for sunset. There’s also a cosy indoor dining area for cooler nights. With Michelin accreditation, we were advised to book ahead — it’s a popular choice among locals and visitors alike. We hadn’t booked, but managed to get an early table on our first evening without issue.

Picture golden hour, boho lampshades swaying gently, the soft hum of bird chatter, and the scent of lemon trees. Dress code here is relaxed — though this is the South of France, so there’s a certain unspoken standard.

The menu was slightly limited, and for us, the food wasn’t especially memorable. The cocktails needed a bit of work, too. In hindsight, we probably should have gone for a local wine. Still, the overall setting and atmosphere made for a gorgeous experience.

Breakfast was a small let-down. It wasn’t available to add during booking or at check-in. We later learned the hotel can prepare a small (chargeable) breakfast menu on request. Given the size and layout of our suite, we’d have loved the option to enjoy it in-room. A made-to-order breakfast offering — ideally with in-room dining — would feel more in keeping with the standard of the property.

The Service

Think warm, friendly, first-name-basis service, with the sense that you’re a distant cousin staying with family.

Check-in was an informal process at the bar, which we loved.

We did experience a small issue with the electrics in our suite, but the team were quick to respond, respectful of our space, and genuinely helpful throughout.

The Facilities

Alongside the pools, you can make use of complimentary bikes or enjoy a game of boules. A spa with treatment rooms is in the works — but honestly, the massage by our private pool felt like the ultimate luxury. It might have been the best I’ve ever had.

Final Thoughts

We adored this hotel and would return in a heartbeat. If privacy and beautiful design are high on your list, Toile Blanche is a serene, smart option — and the ideal partner to a busier stay in Monaco or Cannes. Go here when you’re ready to switch off and sink into true downtime.
