Can Ferrereta, Mallorca: A Design-Lover’s Hideaway in Santanyí

Mallorca. Palma. Pollensa. Sóller. Most travellers know these names well. But Santanyí? Likely not. This small, traditional town has little in the way of big-ticket attractions, which is exactly why it’s the perfect setting for Can Ferrereta – a discreet luxury hotel now in its third full season.

First Impressions

We drove past the entrance twice before spotting it. On the third try, the discreet crittal doors slid open as we stopped, and the concierge quickly appeared to take our bags. Inside, the General Manager greeted us personally and led us on a fascinating tour of this former 17th-century mansion. The whole property radiates serenity – calm, unhurried, and almost club-like, with an atmosphere that hints at private members’ territory.

The Rooms

There are 32 rooms and suites, all generously sized and entirely five-star in feel. The design is muted and textural, with natural materials and a dramatic curved staircase adding a strong architectural focus throughout.

We stayed in a Junior Suite in the main building. The bathroom was nearly as large as the bedroom, with high stone ceilings, a walk-in shower, a separate bath, and his-and-hers sinks beneath a dreamy skylight. The only drawback was the lack of outdoor space – an inevitable quirk of being in the oldest part of the building. If a terrace is important to you, it’s worth booking one of the other room categories that offer this.

Thoughtful touches were everywhere, from the high-quality bathroom products to exquisite turndown gifts that made each evening feel special.

The Food

Dining is limited to two restaurants, but it doesn’t feel restrictive. La Fresca serves relaxed poolside fare (I had the best Caesar salad of my life here – twice), while Ocre offers refined dining either indoors or al fresco in the courtyard, depending on the season. In early April, evenings were still cool, so we dined indoors.

After dinner, the intimate library space is the place to be, with its collection of vinyl records and expertly mixed cocktails. Breakfast is served in Ocre: a simple but ample buffet, alongside à la carte dishes like pan con tomate and Spanish tortilla.

If you want a change of scenery, Es Molí (a short walk away) is a great option, or head to Cassai in Ses Salines for a whimsical, fairy-tale setting.

The Service

Service was consistently flawless. The team strike the balance between warm and polished, and nothing seemed too much trouble. At one point, they even found us a table in the fully booked restaurant – no small feat.

The Facilities

The spa is the real star here, and arguably one of the best in Europe. It may be discreet in size, but the treatments are exceptional. My Anne Semonin facial left me glowing well into the next day. There’s also a sleek pool and plenty of quiet corners to unwind, though those staying more than a few nights may want to explore beyond the property.

With a car, you can easily reach other parts of Mallorca. Don’t miss Deià – and be sure to reserve well in advance at the legendary Ca’s Patro March, where tables are notoriously hard to come by.

Final Thoughts

Can Ferrereta is ideal for design lovers, honeymooners, and couples seeking a quietly luxurious escape. With its serene atmosphere, refined service, and standout spa, it feels like a discovery worth keeping to yourself.

Average rates (per night):
Entry-level room: £200 in low season, £400 in mid season, and £600 in high season. The hotel is adults-only (14+).
