Teranka, Formentera: The Island’s Best-Kept Secret
This was my second trip to the dreamy island of Formentera (the last being a fleeting day visit back in 2018). This time, I stayed at the recently opened – and what feels like a true hidden gem – Teranka. This small luxury hotel has quickly become my current favourite. Part of the allure is its remoteness, far from the crowds. It almost feels like a secret I shouldn’t be sharing.
First Impressions
Arriving in Formentera already feels like a secret worth keeping. One of Teranka’s staff met us at the port as we stepped off the ferry, ready to drive us the 20 minutes to the hotel in a brand-new Land Rover Defender – the most luxurious vehicle on the island’s sleepy roads. It was a preview of the understated luxury to come.
Set on a protected beachside estate, the property hides behind a 200-year-old Catalonian door. With its closed entrance and discreet façade, it looks more like a private residence than a hotel. From the start, it feels like you’ve arrived at someone’s secluded retreat.

The Rooms
With just 35 rooms, Teranka was designed never to feel busy. Twenty-two are housed in the main building, with six garden suites (Tierra) and seven terrace suites (Cielo) set slightly apart from the pool. Interiors are minimalist, with natural stone floors and bathrooms, accented by contemporary art and earthy tones.
The highlight? Showers with floor-to-ceiling (partly frosted) windows that give the sensation of bathing outdoors. It’s luxe in a refreshingly barefoot way.
The Food
Breakfast at Teranka is a laid-back affair, served across a mix of indoor corners and shaded terraces. There’s a high-quality cold buffet alongside made-to-order eggs, toasts, bowls, and crêpes. Don’t miss the Formentera Toast – tomato, sobrasada (a soft chorizo), and honey – so good I ordered it twice.
The rooftop, run by Nobu, is another standout. With panoramic views of pine forest to the back and the sea in front, it’s the kind of place you could spend an entire afternoon.

The Service
From the meet-and-greet at the port to quiet, attentive touches throughout the stay, service here is polished without being intrusive. Teranka has the feeling of a place where staff genuinely want you to feel at home – more private residence than hotel, in the best sense.
The Facilities
While there’s no formal spa, wellbeing is woven into the atmosphere. Yoga and meditation classes are available, and there’s a stylish outdoor gym for those who want to work out in the Formentera sunshine. Two treatment rooms offer massages, facials, and body therapies if you’re in the mood to indulge.
Beyond the hotel, rent a scooter to explore the island. Lunch at Casa Pacha is essential, and sunsets at Carlitos – best with tapas and a cold drink in hand – are unforgettable.
Final Thoughts
Teranka is exactly the hotel Formentera was missing. A place of casual luxury without the stuffiness, still flying under the radar of the international “it” crowd. I loved it so much I’m already plotting a return.
